Beauty of Joseon Revitalize Sleeping Mask

The Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream has been a cult favourite in the K-Beauty community for years, so when the company reached out early last year and asked if I wanted to try their products, I was totally down. It’s been just under a year since I first started using both the cream and the sleeping pack, and I’m finally here writing my review. There a ton of reviews of the cream, so here are my thoughts on the sleeping mask…

(These products were gifted by the company.)

Purpose & Directions

A sleeping mask (or “pack”) is supposed to aid in moisturizing skin overnight, predominantly by sealing in the moisture from your skincare routine. The description on the box is:

” Dual functions for brightening & anti-wrinkle. Anti-aging sleeping mask with non-sticky formula to make smoother and more resilient skin overnight.”

How to use: “Apply a proper amount evenly across face. Tap lightly to make it absorbed.”

Personally, I apply this at the end of my routine in the evening, and then rinse off the next morning. I used it almost every night for about a month for testing (back in early 2018), and I still use it pretty frequently.

Product Details & Ingredients

Name: Beauty of Joseon Revitalize Sleeping Mask

Amount: 80ml

Ingredients (this list was provided to me by the company):

Immediately the silicones stand out to me- from first glance this suggests the product is going to be an occlusive. It should prevent loss of moisture! This is exactly what I’m looking for in a sleeping mask. Overall, however, the list was pretty underwhelming to me.

The three marketed ingredients are:

– Black Bean extract. Supposed to improve elasticity and has antioxidant properties.

– Ginseng extract. Supposed to smooth and revitalize skin.

– Orchid extract. Supposed to help renew skin and retain moisture.

When I was looking at the box for ingredient info, this statement really concerned me: “Use as quickly as possible after opening.”

With no opening time indicator on the product, I was worried. Did I have to use it up within 6 months? 3 months? 1 month?! I contacted the company and my friend there said it’s kind of a translation issue when the directions were translated from Korean to English. She told me the product is okay for 2 years, however personally I wouldn’t leave a jar open for more than 12 months.

Packaging

The packaging is really gorgeous. It looks beautiful on my vanity, and is heavyweight luxurious. It also comes with a small spatula, but here’s my skincare confession: I rarely use spatulas. I always lose them and impatiently go in with my (clean) fingers.

Texture & Scent

I’m OBSESSED with the texture. It’s like pudding? It’s thick and retains it’s shape after digging into it. I was pretty fascinated with the texture.

The scent is pleasant, but definitely fragranced and slightly perfumey. I don’t mind it but I usually prefer something more natural/herbal/hanbang.

When you apply the pack to skin it spreads smoothly, and feels really lovely, albeit verrry siliconey. It forms quite a thick, heavy layer, and does feel like it sits on top of skin for a while. It absorbs to some extent during the night, although there is a definite film when I wake up.

Overall Performance

I’ve been enjoying this product for just under a year now! The texture is very enjoyable, and it does what I want by sealing my evening routine.

The main effect the next morning is a subtle glow, as the moisture from my night before routine is retained SO well. This glow comes through even after cleansing my face. My skin also feels very smooth and soft, which I love.

I can’t say I’ve really noticed particular brightening effects or anti-wrinkle (although I feel that anti-wrinkle naturally comes from hydrating and moisturizing, which this pack helps do).

When I wake up there is a slight film on my face of the ingredients that can’t fully absorb, which is totally fine by me, and what I’d expect of an overnight pack. I find that I definitely need to layer the hydration and moisturizing layers before this sleeping pack. In itself, it doesn’t really moisturize my skin, but acts as a barrier to lock in the previous layers and so it’s crucial to do those!

Overall, this a nice addition to the Beauty of Joseon line-up. The pack is certainly doing the job of sealing my skincare routine and preventing moisture loss overnight. Although not a product I would say is particularly outstanding or innovative, it does do exactly as I require of a sleeping mask and is a trustworthy choice.

Price & Availability

When I first began drafting this post back in early-mid 2018, I made a note that the mask was available on the company’s Korean site for 18,900KRW, and internationally on Cosmetic Jolse for $18. I just did another search today, and I’m so shocked to find that on most sites it’s $30-$34, around £26 in the UK, and 30,000KRW on the company website. The cheapest I could find is on Cosmetic Jolse where it’s currenty reduced to $20, and to be completely honest, that’s the most I’d pay for it. Although I thoroughly enjoyed it, I just couldn’t justify it for $30. I’d way rather go for Cosrx Honey Overnight pack which is around $18. It’s just too much of a basic, albeit effective, product to pay so much for.

Let me know if you’ve tried this sleeping mask in the comments! Would love to hear more experiences with this.
