My Guide to Winged Eyeliner

I still get asked so frequently about my winged liner, despite the fact that I rarely wear it much anymore! So thought I’d make a short post that you guys can refer to. I hope this is useful as I cover my favourite products and the exact way I do the liner itself.

How To

I only started doing wings once I moved to Korea. Black liner on the upper lid is very popular, and it was actually the puppy liner trend I started doing before upturned wings (puppy liner goes down at the ends).

Here’s a step by step for how I use a pen liner to do wings:

  1. I start in the inner corner, although this is an unpopular choice!
  2. I press the liner into my lash line first and go all the along, to ensure the black is tightly lined. I don’t worry too much about the neatness of this- the point is I’m making sure the area closest to my lashes is fully inked.
  3. I then go over this to smooth out the line.
  4. Now the wing…I press the pen in a diagonal line up from the corner towards my eye as a guide, allowing it to touch my skin so I can see the guide.
  5. I then draw back and fill in the wing.

Finished! It doesn’t always go so well but I do use a cotton bud dipped in eye make-up remover and concealer to adjust and tidy up if necessary.

My Favourites

If I’m doing wings, I don’t use anything but pens or brushes, so here are my best options!

Golden Go-To

Clio Kill Black/Brown Pen Liner. This is such a good liner because of the sturdy tip, as well as the fact it just lasts forever. The black version is super inky and opaque which is ideal for glam looks, while the brown is slightly less opaque and subtle. This is my main eyeliner recommendation whenever I get asked!

The Daily

Sailor Moon Miracle Romance Liquid Eyeliner Waterproof. Now I haven’t talked about this much because honestly, I’m not 100% certain I have the right name here. It’s a Sailor Moon option I bought last year and it’s subtle but pretty. It’s not totally opaque but dark enough to make a difference, and very pretty for a daily look.

The Pro

Touch in Sol Liner. This is so so fine which makes it beautiful for strong wings with a super sharp finish. It does make it more tricky to work with because it’s so precise. It’s also quite pricey and mine didn’t last too long. BUT it made for incredible wings.

Budget Option

Canmake Quick Easy Eyeliner is a very solid budget option. It doesn’t last too many uses, but if you’re just practicing or want to play around, it’s great! Very black, precise and an amazing price. I got it for $5 in Japan but I think it’s still under $10 abroad.

What are your favourite eyeliners? Would love to hear from you in the comments!
